Why do wrinkles form?
Young skin is thick with collagen (structure) and elastin (snap-back), and it bounces back from every expression. Two clocks run against that:
- The intrinsic clock — from our mid-20s, collagen production declines slowly year over year. This is genetics and time; everyone's on it.
- The extrinsic clock — UV exposure, smoking, pollution, and high-sugar diets actively break collagen down and degrade elastin. This clock is largely optional, and it usually runs faster than the first one.
Dermatologists estimate that a large share of visible facial aging is photoaging — the extrinsic kind. That's the genuinely hopeful fact in this topic: much of what we call aging is sun damage, and sun damage is preventable.
Dynamic lines vs. static wrinkles — what's the difference?
Dynamic lines appear only when you move: crow's feet when you smile, forehead lines when you raise your brows. They're creases in action, made by muscles.
Static wrinkles are visible at rest. They start as dynamic lines that repeated over decades while collagen thinned, until the fold became permanent — like a crease worn into leather.
Fine lines from dehydration are the third, most fixable category: shallow crinkling (often under the eyes) that plumps away noticeably when skin is properly hydrated. If your "wrinkles" soften dramatically after a good moisturizer, start with our dehydration guide.
What actually works against wrinkles?
- Sunscreen, daily. The single best anti-wrinkle product ever made, because it stops the main cause. Every other item on this list works better on protected skin.
- Retinoids. The best-evidenced topical for softening existing lines — they signal skin to build collagen and smooth surface texture over months. Start low; our retinol beginner's guide covers the on-ramp.
- Vitamin C. Antioxidant defense by day plus a supporting role in collagen synthesis — a natural partner to morning SPF.
- Moisturizer with humectants. Won't rebuild collagen, but instantly plumps dehydration lines and makes skin read years smoother.
- Sleep and not smoking. Unfashionable, outsized returns.
Procedures (botulinum toxin, fillers, lasers, microneedling) operate beyond what skincare can do — a dermatologist can tell you honestly which category your lines fall into.
How Beeuty tracks fine lines from a selfie
Beeuty's Fine Lines & Wrinkles analysis looks for line patterns in the classic zones — forehead, around the eyes, nasolabial area — and estimates their visible prominence, while Glow Age rolls texture, tone, and line signals into one age estimate you can track. The point isn't the number on day one; it's the trend line. Retinoids and SPF work on a months-long timescale, and a monthly selfie is a surprisingly good way to watch it happen — or to catch drift early.

One selfie gives you a skin-age estimate and a fine-line map — take another next month and watch the trend, not the mirror.
